Latest figures from the ONS paint a depressing regional picture…


On the 5th of September 2019, the Office for National Statistics released the latest GDP figures for UK regions and countries. The figures highlighted in the graph below demonstrate that whilst the British economy as a whole has avoided a technical recession since 2015, this masks wide variation between regions, particularly those in the North, who have spent a significant proportion of the time since the creation of the Northern Powerhouse either stagnating or contracting in size. This is why CLES is calling for a fundamental regeneration and devolution rethink.
