Good Local Economies in practice

There has never been a more urgent time to re-think how we run our city economies. We have a huge opportunity to design city economies in a way that bring wealth and prosperity equally to all our communities, rather than deepening the divides between communities in places, and between different cities and regions.

This year, five UK cities have been developing approaches to this through the Good City Economy project with the New Economics Foundation and the Centre for Local Economic Strategies – Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Leeds.

You are invited to a Learning Event, to explore and deepen our understanding of what is possible to achieve at city level. This event will showcase the work of the Good City Economy project in five UK cities; and explore input and ideas from across a wider range of practitioners, policy makers and other experts in this field of work from across other cities. We’ll be launching our Good Local Economy online handbooks for local government and civil society, of practical projects from across the UK, highlighting the powers and resources available – and the places using them – to create more resilient local economies through procurement and commissioning streams and in housing, finance and energy.

In the afternoon there will be a range of workshops:

  •  What does inclusive prosperity look like in practice?
  •  How can hospitals and other anchor institutions be embedded in the local economy?
  •  How can we expand community economic development in our towns and cities?
  •  How can we build foundational economies
  •  Lessons from those involved in community-run housing
  •  Finance for a Good City Economy: Where’s the innovation?

Please join us, as part of a network of practitioners from local government, communities, civil society and the business sector, people who are interested in and involved in building more resilient local economies. We look forward to learning from your expertise, and creating opportunities for you to learn from others.
