When: 5th September, 10am-4pm

Where: London School of Economics, Clement House, 99 Aldwych, London, WC2B 4JF

A unique one day event – considering the future of our towns and what we can practically do now to make them great again.

The government announced that Town Team Partners will receive backing from a multi-million pound support programme and that further details would follow in September. Now is the time to hear more about the support which will be available to those areas who bid for Portas Pilot funding, as well as hear from experienced and inspirational speakers and organisations. Grant Shapps has issued a call to MPs from the 392 Town Teams not chosen to come forward and sign a national pledge to become a Town Team Partner – enabling access to a package of support to their own town. The package of support is worth £5.5m nationwide.

ATCM, in partnership with CLES, on behalf of DCLG will show you the way ahead – From Start Up to Stability

Our towns and town centres are vital to the health of our society and play a key role in our local and national identity. However, they have reached a critical point. Changing retail spending behaviour, economic decline, changing use and demography mean that our towns are losing purpose and vibrancy. We now must look forward, think afresh, and develop activity so that we can all create a new positive commercial, and social and cultural future for our towns.

This task is urgent and we must think now. This is why leading UK organisations (ATCM and CLES), and their chief executives have come together alongside Village Well to deliver a uniquely important day ensuring the momentum built up by the Portas review and funding rounds is not lost. Coming at this event from many collective years of retail, town centre management, economic development and place making experience, the three organisations represent vision, hope for what our towns can be and above all practical experience from the UK and around the world.

As well as input from these three organisations there will be input from a range of towns at the cutting edge who are already tackling the issues head on. The event will offer:

  • Vision. What can our towns become?
  • Debate. What are the challenges?
  • Experience. From an economic development, place making and town centre management perspective with real live examples
  • Understanding. Of policy initiatives such as the Portas pilots
  • Practical help. As regards improving the public, social and commercial aspects of towns
  • Networking. Taking the Town Team Partners concept

The event will also outline the support which ATCM will be providing as part of the Government’s support package and details of how Town Teams can gain access to it.

Main sessions on:

  • Place making for great and enduring towns – Led by Gilbert Rochecouste
  • Economic resilience: making our towns go ‘boing not splat’! – Led by Neil McInroy
  • How is the business community responding to current challenges – Led by Andy Godfrey
  • Working together: collaborating and managing our towns together – Led by Martin Blackwell
