Weighing up the options when it comes to the stewardship and development of our local economies is extremely challenging for local government. Nevertheless, progressive frontiers continue to advance and in this paper we draw upon insights gathered from local councils and other anchor partners from across the UK where, despite the challenges, local leaders are taking steps to build wealth. We illustrate the importance of the work they are doing to intervene to support the local economy and make a number of recommendations for local practice to continue to flourish. We also make recommendations for Westminster, outlining what the next government of the UK should do to empower local government to deliver change at a greater scale and pace.
