Across the UK – and beyond – people are recognising the limits of the economic development model that prizes economic growth over social and environmental need. They want to build a different kind of economy, one that is fairer, greener and works for communities, people and places. Community Wealth Building offers just that, and the movement behind it is growing.

Last year’s inaugural Summit was a sell-out event, demonstrating the appetite and energy that now exists to see Community Wealth Building move into the mainstream of economic development. This year’s event will build on that momentum and see the launch of CLES’ new Community Wealth Building Centre of Excellence.

Who it’s for

The Summit is for anyone who wants to build an economy that works for all. Over the last ten years, Community Wealth Building ideas have been taken up and applied by an ever-growing number of socially minded businesses and social and public sector organisations across the regions and countries of the UK. This event will bring together people from across these sectors and places, from local authorities and credit unions to community owned football clubs and hospitals.

What to expect

This year’s event will reflect upon the three themes of the Community Wealth Building Centre of Excellence: building networks, influencing policy and supporting practice.

Based on our experience of last year’s Summit, and work over the last twelve months, we expect this year’s summit to support:

  • Continued growth of community wealth building activity across the UK, including through engagement in the Centre of Excellence programme of training, regional networking events, practice resources and consultancy support;
  • New partnerships between delegates, many of whom will have never engaged across sectors in this way;
  • Increased awareness and understanding of the ideas behind community wealth building and the places where they are being applied.
