Julian Boys

Associate Director (Economic Strategy)

Julian leads CLES’s analytical work on local economies, as well as strategy development with our partners in the public and third sector seeking to build more inclusive economies and maximise benefits to communities. His areas of expertise include:

  • Economic strategy development

  • Political economy of industrial policy

His recent work includes developing approaches to economic extraction analysis, including analysis of profits and dividend extraction in the care sector for the publication Ending extraction in the UK care system.

Julian brings 15 years’ experience working internationally on the economics of sustainable inclusive development. Prior to joining CLES Julian worked as a consultant on sustainability and socio-economic strategy development; an economic policy advisor to governments; and as a researcher and lecturer.

He holds a PhD in Economics from SOAS (University of London). His analysis and commentary has been published in the Financial Times, Guardian, LBC, Northern Agenda, Labour List among other media outlets.
