The North East’s economy depends far more on everyday sectors like care, retail, hospitality and construction than the government’s high-growth industries. This report maps the region’s foundational economy and examines the role these sectors play in regional growth, job quality and economic resilience, comparing them with priority industrial sectors.
The report also analyses public sector procurement spending across the region, identifying opportunities to use public investment to improve economic resilience and inclusion, and keep more wealth circulating within the North East.
