Recent UK governments have framed economic growth and devolution as mutually reinforcing priorities. As strategic authorities develop local growth plans aligned with the government’s industrial strategy, CLES, the King’s Fund and the Health Foundation propose that these plans should be understood not only as economic strategies, but as health interventions.

The relationship between growth and health is not automatic: this essay reflects on what the purpose of local growth plans should be – meeting local needs by strengthening local economies and the building blocks of health.

This essay was written by the Centre for Local Economies and The King’s Fund, as part of a programme of work commissioned by The Health Foundation.
